The Art of Cold Calling: Delight the Gate-Keepers!
Cold calling. Just hearing those words can send shivers down the spine of even the most seasoned entrepreneur. The fear of rejection is real. But there’s magic on the other side of that fear.
When you push through it, you unlock doors you never knew were there. Let me share a story that might change how you see cold outreach forever.
Key Takeaways from this Video + Podcast:
Face Your Fears: The hardest part of cold calling isn’t making the call—it’s deciding to do it. Once you start, the fear dissolves.
Delight the Gatekeepers: The admin assistants are your best allies. Make them laugh, connect with them, and you’ll gain access to the decision-makers in any organization.
Be Spontaneous: Forget scripts and over-planning. Be genuine, curious, and adaptable in the moment. AKA - Be a human!
Momentum Breeds Opportunity: Action creates traction. The energy you invest will ripple into unexpected breakthroughs.
Think Big: Don’t limit yourself to small goals. Aim for partnerships that align with your vision and expand your reach exponentially.
The Story Behind the Success
Last week, while spinning my wheels in my office, I decided to stop overthinking and pick up the phone.
A couple of our goals with Play Chi Ball, the fast, fun, minimalist handball game we are spreading, is to create leagues across North America through the YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs. Tapping into these organizations could potentially reach millions of people with minimal effort.
We call that LEVERAGE in the Biz: Getting one relationship to lead to MANY customers. It's how I have grown Majik Media to be what it is!
With no script or plan, I dialled the YMCA in Victoria BC. The admin assistant answered, and my only goal was to delight her. When she asked how I was doing, I replied, “Better than ever!” Her laughter set the tone for a genuine conversation. I explained that we’d love to do a demo league experience at their YMCA, and she connected me with Kyle, who runs athletics for all of Vancouver Island.
Kyle loved the idea and was genuinely excited. He asked for our materials, and we agreed to take next steps. I repeated the process with the Boys & Girls Clubs, and once again, the admin assistant connected me with Kyla, who oversees all of Vancouver Island.
Same result: enthusiasm and opportunity.
Why It Worked
Connection First: By making the gatekeepers laugh and engaging them authentically, I built trust.
Authenticity Over Perfection: I wasn’t overly polished. My excitement and sincerity carried the conversation.
Immediate Action: From decision to dialling, it took 30 seconds. Action overcame hesitation.
Thinking Bigger
This experience fired up a new vision. Why stop at local organizations? What about introducing Play Chi Ball at major conferences like Tony Robbins events, Hay House gatherings, or Mindvalley’s Awesomeness Fest? These events attract influential leaders who could amplify our mission and spread the Chi far and wide!
The Ripple Effect
The very next morning, a large homeschooling organization reached out to us. Momentum creates opportunity. This isn’t just about cold calling; it’s about unblocking the energy of waiting and stepping into action.
Take the First Step
If you know what you want and the organizations you’d love to partner with, pick up the phone. Delight the gatekeepers, and get your foot in the door. A single call could set the stage for a breakthrough.
Well.... what are you waiting for? Get to it!!
