Today’s creative coaching process is a little longer—but it’s a powerful one.
It’ll help you understand me more deeply, and more importantly, help you understand yourself more clearly.
As promised, if you give yourself 60 minutes a day with me this week, big breakthroughs will follow.
Today, I’m sharing my origin story—followed by a creative coaching process to help you uncover and share the depths of your own origin story, life experiences, and wisdom. Let’s dive in…
EARLY BEGINNINGS: The Heart of an Entrepreneur
Ever since I was little, I have had the entrepreneurial spirit running through my veins. As a kid, I was always dreaming up ideas to earn extra money for the things I wanted; from backyard driving ranges, to magnet on a string coin collecting schemes, to being “the guy” who’d cold-call 14 friends after school to organize epic road hockey or capture the flag games. I was and still am a man of inspired action.
But it wasn’t until I dropped out of college at 20 to start my first business that my natural way of being became my path—and creative ideas became how I get paid.
THE MOMENT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
So—you know those moments that change everything?
Mine came one night in my early 20s, walking home drunk and angry. I’d just gotten into a fistfight—with my own face. Literally. I’d come to hate myself because I’d become everything I always swore I’d never be… and with desperation and despair, I dropped to my knees in the middle of the street and prayed to whatever higher powers were listening to show me a better path.
The next morning, I wrote a letter to myself that would become my compass:
“I will create a life I’m proud of.”
That’s when I lit a match—literally.
I gathered up all the offensive, degrading t-shirts from my first business, which was called “ManShirts” (yes, that was a thing) and burned them on a beach in a ritualistic bonfire. Not the most eco-friendly rite of passage, but it was my line in the sand.
I was done creating garbage. I wanted to make Majik.
SINCE THAT TURNING POINT
I’ve spent the last 20+ years turning inspiration into impact. Here are some of the highlights—because I want you to see what’s possible when you align your life, energy, passions and income around what truly matters most to you and what you love to do.
I went viral before it was cool.
In 2007, I uploaded my very first YouTube video: The Gratitude Dance. It was goofy, fun, and it exploded. Overnight, my buddy and I were touring North America as The GratiDudes, getting featured in magazines, TV, radio, conferences & even in a documentary (Beyond Belief).
We launched a hit podcast (Manifesting Awesomeness), interviewed Louise Hay, Gregg Braden, Bruce Lipton and many other Spiritual Luminaries and eventually signed a big book deal with Hay House…
…which got pulled the week before publishing because one of their “biggest authors” didn’t want us teaching the same topic. Long, but true story.
It was heartbreaking. But in hindsight, it became a gift.
It pushed me deeper into myself, made me stronger, and motivated me to build success on my own terms.
Since then, I’ve stopped waiting for permission. Instead, I keep creating, find aligned relationships, and let my work speak for itself.
I went on to teach 500+ meditation workshops and retreats around the world—without formal training.
I went within and found my power in my presence.
After moving back home to Canada from LA in 2008, I started leading informal meditation sessions for a group of friends. That small group quickly grew in my local, Victoria BC community and abroad. Within three years, I’d led over 500+ Cowabunga Meditations and was guiding spiritual adventure retreats in Tofino, Hawaii, Mexico, Peru & beyond.
I taught what I practiced, learned & discovered through my own transformational experiences, and as a result, people’s lives changed in magical ways.
Eventually, I grew tired of teaching meditation, so I began recording the techniques I’d developed into an audio meditation library. A few rejections later, I licensed the full library to Mindvalley and became their top meditation teacher for 6+ years in a row.
Those same meditations have now reached millions of meditators through licensing deals with some of the biggest meditation apps and platforms—generating over half a million dollars in purely passive income without ever needing to grow my own meditation audience. Not a single social media post.
I now help others get their life’s work licensed. Talk about leverage!
I co-created the most gamified course on the internet.
From the success of my meditation library, I transitioned into full-time business coaching and in 2015, I decided to team up with my buddies Andy and Blair to create The Great eCourse Adventure—imagine Indiana Jones meets Saturday Night Live in a business development course, where we teach you to build the greatest online course you could possibly imagine – it was and still is epic!
We filmed everything on green screen. Hilarious characters taught the lessons. We designed an actual adventure map students could hang on their wall. We built our own digital currency (Bajillions) and badging system. Our online forum was the “campfire.”
We even coined the term: Themification—the art of turning boring courses into epic, story-driven adventures.
Justin Ferriman (founder of LearnDash) called it:
“The best use of gamification I’ve ever seen in online learning.”
We didn’t just teach people how to create better courses—we made learning fun again for both teachers and students alike. This is also when Majik Media’s creative agency was launched and we’ve since supported dozens of clients to build their dream offerings by combining creativity, strategy, community, gamification and storytelling. Then I left social media and grew my business without it.
In 2016, after years of hating my social media experience, algorithm fatigue and watching “the great divide” take place, I deleted all my social media accounts. No soft exit. No “find me elsewhere” post. Just gone. Disappeared.
I felt erased. And it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made because it forced me to learn how to leverage and nurture relationships with other aligned humans.
I focused on building a real village in my life, my community and then in my business. This has transformed the way I do business and approach “marketing.”
Since then, I’ve grown multiple 6-figure businesses, reached millions of people, and built plenty of epic, profitable, thriving online & in-person village-like community spaces—without social media.
I now know that we don’t need tens of thousands of followers and fans. We can build thriving, successful businesses with just a handful of strategically aligned relationships.
That learning journey became a now-famous workshop called:
Thriving in Business Without Social Media – Here is the link I sent yesterday.
Which has helped thousands of entrepreneurs unplug from the noise and reconnect with what actually works: Relationships. I highly recommend you watch it as soon as possible!
I then created an Audio Entertainment + Fair Pay Publishing company and Majik Kids App with my son, Sauryn.
My son Sauryn has grown up with limited screen time. He still to this day only gets one show per week. However, we have embraced audio stories as a way for him to receive the power of storytelling in his life. Growing up, every night before bed, he would ask, “Papa, tell me a pretend story.”
So we started writing them down and recording them. One of them—The Master's Apprentice—sparked something in me. I wanted to publish it. But I didn’t want to wait 3 years to get it to market, lose 92% of revenue, and get no help with marketing.
So we built our own kids publishing company: Majik Kids.
In the first few years, we raised $250,000 of investment capital and I personally invested about $500,000 of my own money – as a result, we have built a world-class company, hired my dream team of artists, worked with the Harmon Brothers on comedy ads (yes, the unicorn poop guys) & launched the best audio entertainment platform we could dream up. Today we’ve created or curated a library of:
18 beautifully illustrated books
A massive library of 50+ “Movies for the Ears” Audio Stories
A Writers Room and Story Engine that Keeps on Creating
800+ original kids songs & Imagination Meditations
A wildly creative curriculum with every story
31 Comedy Commercials with 2 million+ organic views
The Majik Kids App—a “story button” for kids, inspired by an idea from my son
Dozens of huge licensing partnerships to schools, apps, and global companies
And we’re just getting started.
We launched a new sport that is becoming a movement.
I’d been playing and refining the rules of a fast-paced, flow-inducing handball game for over a decade—using beautiful, hand-woven wicker balls. It’s called Chi Ball. Over the years, we developed a simple set of rules, a playful culture rooted in inclusivity, and sourced the most beautiful balls we could find.
In 2024, I teamed up with my good friend Mike Rogers to officially launch PlayChiBall.com—turning this joyful backyard game into a global movement that Chi Ballers can play anywhere, with anyone.
Chi Ball is the most effortlessly sellable thing I’ve ever created. People see it, play it once, and they’re hooked. I feel such delight when someone purchases a $30 Chi Ball, knowing how much joy and connection they’ll experience as a result.
Now, I’m on a mission to play my way to selling millions of Chi Balls—and unite the world through movement, presence, and play.
It is the funnest, most satisfying business I’ve ever launched. I am having a ton of fun. We even made a hip-hop anthem for the game, “I’m a Chi Baller!” and our most effective marketing strategy to date is FlashMob Chi Ball events in public spaces.
AND I’M JUST GETTING WARMED UP…
Over the years we have:
launched dozens of binge-worthy trainings,
supported clients in generating millions of dollars,
coached thousands of entrepreneurs,
created thriving community spaces,
produced viral comedy videos,
experimented with countless business models,
ran the Majik Mind coaching community—and so much more.
Not to mention, in the process of my business accomplishments, I’ve played 3000+ rounds of golf, competed professionally on the Vancouver & Canadian Tour, been a devoted adventure dad, present husband, and men’s group leader.
I am aligning my daily actions with living my dream life now – not later… because life is short and we just don’t know how many more breaths we get to breathe.
I have committed to aligning my passions with how I get paid for 20+ years. Sure, it’s been hard… but the struggles have been for my dreams, not someone else’s.
THE MORAL OF THE STORY:
You don’t need to follow someone else’s Blueprint. You just need a clear vision, an aligned strategy, the creative fire to get shit done AND most importantly – the courage to believe in yourself enough to walk your own path.
Thanks for walking down memory lane with me. Hopefully you can see how my creative, unorthodox path as an entrepreneur can serve and support you.
NOW IT’S TIME TO WRITE YOUR ORIGIN STORY TOO…
If you were to look back on the last bunch of years of your life, there have been some powerful experiences, trainings you took, epiphanies had and moments that have truly shaped your life and supported you to step into the work you are here to do…
And there is nothing more powerful than a great story.
So, for the next 30-minutes you’re going to go through a wee creative process where you pull out some of the key moments and milestones from your journey – like I just did.
LOW POINTS:
Make a list of some of the low points in your life journey. The “Oh shit moments” that forced your life in a new direction or showed you what you’re made of. Describe them in detail. What emotions were felt? What decisions were made? How did you get through? Our hardships can act as a life raft to others going through similar circumstances.
TURNING POINTS:
Make a list of your most life-changing moments or decisions. These are the turning point choices you made, epiphanies had, tools you learned at just the right moment. They could be mentors who came into your life or leaps of faith you took. Highlight these turning points that changed everything for you.
HIGH POINTS:
With those other two lists in mind, what are some of your proudest accomplishments? These do not need to be just ‘work related.’ They can be who you’ve become as a result of risks you took or changes you made. They could be success you’ve found along the way. They could be what you’ve gone on to do since. Even client case studies or bucket list adventures you’ve had.
LESSONS LEARNED:
What are some of the most important life lessons you’ve learned through your transformational life journey? If you could share a list of things you wish every person paying attention to your work could know and embody, what would that list be?
PHILOSOPHY:
Based on your life experiences, what do you stand for? What do you know to be true? What is your philosophy (based on what you do in the world)? How do you live that philosophy in practice every day?
Once you go through these questions and write your answers—see if these stories are woven through your bio, messaging, website, content strategy and business model.
You could even create a “Manifesto or Philosophy” page like I did (see below)...
Check out my Philosophy Page here…
Read my Majik Manifesto here….
Lean more into your stories. They will inspire others.
And if you want to leverage the power of storytelling – I have a US$129 “Create your 12-Week Content Marketing Strategy with Storytelling” training that may be aligned. Check it out.
Was this helpful and inspiring? Let me know. I’d love to hear from you!
Watch for tomorrow’s email – it is going to be a powerful visioning process, where you map out who you are becoming and what you intend to do with your passions & gifts.
Stay awesome – and remember, the coaching process I’m sharing only works if you do the work. So skip doom scrolling tonight and get creatively inspired!
This is life aligning sh*t here!
