Schedule Your Success
In the Age of Distraction, Scheduling Your Success Matters...
We live in an age where there is always something competing for our attention.
Emails.
Messages.
Meetings.
Notifications.
Admin.
Other people’s priorities.
And if we’re not intentional, the things that matter most can easily get pushed to tomorrow, next week, or someday.
Recently, my 10-year-old son Soren reminded me of something surprisingly simple.
For the past year, he’s been working on his first full-length graphic novel. It’s a massive project for a kid his age, and for the last six months he’s been coming into the studio with me three days a week for three-to-four-hour creative blocks.
When we were talking about what helped him stick with such a big project, he said it was about “scheduling his success.”
I loved that.
Because when the time was already blocked off, he didn’t have to decide whether he felt like working on his book. He knew that was what the time was for.
The same applies to our businesses and lives.
If writing your book matters, schedule it.
If growing your business through partnerships matters, schedule the outreach.
If your weekly newsletter matters, give it a recurring block.
If your health matters, schedule the workout.
If your spiritual practice matters, protect the time.
And if having absolutely nothing on the agenda matters, schedule that too.
Theme Your Days
One of the most useful practices I’ve found is giving different days a theme.
Maybe Monday is planning, team meetings and administration.
Tuesday is coaching.
Wednesday is creative production.
Thursday is partnerships and relationships.
Friday has space for deep work, exploration or whatever needs your attention.
The specific days don’t matter. The principle does.
Wear as few hats as possible on any given day.
Every time you jump from creative work to email to accounting to coaching to marketing and back again, you lose focus and momentum.
When similar work lives together, you can go deeper and get a surprising amount accomplished in a relatively short amount of time.
Your Calendar Reveals Your Priorities
We all have things we say are important.
But there’s a useful question to ask:
Does your calendar agree?
Look at the season ahead.
What are the three or four things that would make the biggest difference in your business, creativity, health or life?
Then look at your calendar.
Have you actually made room for them?
Because if the important work has no protected time, there’s a pretty good chance the urgent stuff will eat it alive.
I don’t schedule my life because I want every minute optimized.
I schedule the important things because I want to get them done, and then have more time for family, adventures, golf, reading, playing, creating and occasionally doing absolutely nothing.
In the age of distraction, your attention is one of your most valuable resources.
Decide what matters.
Give it a place on your calendar.
Then show up and do the thing.
That’s how you schedule your success.
